Meteorological Agency to announce more detailed information on tsunami

  • Meteorological Agency to announce more detailed information on tsunami

Following the March 11 Great East Japan Earthquake, the agency observed tsunami waves in offshore areas before they actually hit the coastal areas, but was unable to make full use of the information to minimize damage.

For example, a satellite observed about 6.5-meter-high tsunami waves around a GPS buoy some 20 kilometers off Kamaishi, Iwate Prefecture, about 10 minutes before the massive tsunami hit the coastal area of the city, according to the municipal government.

The municipal government intended to warn local residents of the tsunami, but was unable to do so because of a power blackout.
