  • Breaking News: Brontide

    “Very shallow” earthquake has been happening 10 times since 7PM tonight.

    The earthquake which set fire on reactor 4 is suspected to be an underground hydrovolcanic explosion.

    Here is the tweet of a Fukushima citizen.

    It sounded like wave in the sea. At first,it sounded far. and it came slowly,and finally became as loud as the wave.(It was very long)

    I recognized it to be a brontide from the very beginning. It sounds so different from our everyday noise.

    At latitude 37.1 north and longitude 140.8 east (Fukushima) ,there has been 10 earthquakes since 7PM tonight.

  • Radioactive hotspots found in prefectures neighboring Tokyo

    TOKYO (majirox news) — Radioactive hotspots have been found in prefectures neighboring Tokyo with levels of cesium rivaling those found in the least contaminated parts of Fukushima prefecture, according to the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT).

    MEXT released radiation maps of Chiba and Saitama prefectures, both of which neighbor Tokyo, as part of its plan to draw up a visual guide to radiation levels across all of eastern Japan in the wake of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear crisis.

    In a region covering about 10,000 square hectares (38 square miles) of Chiba prefecture and including cities such as Kashiwa and Abiko, levels of cesium 134 and 137 were found in the 60,000 to 100,000 becquerel range – about the same as the least contaminated parts of Fukushima prefecture.

  • Tokyo plans to store, burn debris from disaster zone

    To help quake- and tsuami-damaged areas rebuild, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government said Thursday it is offering to store about 500,000 tons of debris and waste from Iwate and Miyagi prefectures for three years.

    ...

    The burnable trash will be reduced to ashes and dumped into landfills in Tokyo Bay with the nonburnable waste, which will just be directly dumped as is, metro government officials said.

  • Mutton bird radiation warning

    Tasmanians are being warned not to collect dead mutton birds for research.

    A recent Tasmanian Farmers and Graziers Association newsletter describes research into mutton bird exposure to radiation from Japan's Fukushima nuclear plant.

    It says the birds will soon be migrating back to Australia after many spent winter in the Sea of Japan.

  • Area around Prague playground sealed off after gov’t experts find radiation 5 times over limit

    Prague playground sealed off over raised radiation, Prague Monitor, September 29, 2011:

    Police and firefighters sealed off the area around a playground in Prague over increased radiation level Wednesday evening, firefighting unit spokeswoman Pavlina Adamcova told CTK. [...]

    But if the definition of natural resources is expanded to include waste products that can be turned into biomass energy, Japan has more resources for electricity generation than is often recognized.     Roman empire is oftenly praised for their application of sewage systems, while the sad truth remains, that after 2000 years "techology" remains the same. It would be interesting to see a city that decides to convert their sewage systems into biomass, biogass power plants.

  • Using radio waves for more efficient solar power

    Using radio waves to efficiently convert solar power — that’s the idea behind startup Array Converter, which spoke for one of the first times this week at the AlwaysOn GoingGreen conference in San Francisco. Array Converter has developed solar power conversion electronics — which are used to convert the solar power made from the panels (direct current) into power that can flow on the grid (alternating current) — using a radio wave technology called amplitude modulation.

    Array Converter CEO Wendy Arienzo said at the conference: “Marconi came up with radio and called it amplitude modulation. We are taking a well established technology and applying it to solar.”

    The wind does blow in sunny places :)

    The answer in greentech is multilayer technologies. Windturbines with pv covers, motors using advanced piromaterials as interior cover etc... It is not (or shouldn't be) one vs the other. Greentech companies from various fields should integrate their technologies into one efficient power plant. Thats the way to go. And thats something that will generate a true boost in green technologies.

    Sneaking wind turbines into the allmighty oil industry is a smart one too :)

  • World Heritage listing sought for defunct silk mill

    Japan plans to recommend that UNESCO approve a group of cultural assets including the country's oldest government-run silk mill, in Tomioka, Gunma Prefecture, as a World Heritage site.

    what a silly/sick pattern. Each time there is increased radioactivity found in a new prefecture Japan recommends a site from that prefecture to UNESCO as world Heritage site.

  • Government looked at terrorist threat to nuclear plants

    Government planners investigated the risk of terrorists attacking a nuclear power plant in Japan but concluded there was little risk of a release of radioactive substances, according to a secret government report obtained by The Asahi Shimbun.

    while we are being fed terrorist threats at every corner posibility of such an attack is excluded from European nuclear stress tests, courtesy of Andrej Stritar, the head of Slovenian Nuclear Safety Administration, who was supposedly the main negotiator for the exclusion of the possibility of a terrorist attack from the tests.   • Bulgaria to fix control rod problem at nuclear plant

    SOFIA - Protective sleeves on the control rods at one of the reactors in Bulgaria's sole nuclear plant need to be replaced as a safety precaution, the plant said in a statement Thursday.

    The Kozloduy nuclear plant said sleeves on the 61 control rods in the 1,000 Megawatt reactor number six had to be replaced with more modern protective material.
