  • India plans 'safer' nuclear plant powered by thorium

    India has announced plans for a prototype nuclear power plant that uses an innovative "safer" fuel.

    Officials are currently selecting a site for the reactor, which would be the first of its kind, using thorium for the bulk of its fuel instead of uranium – the fuel for conventional reactors. They plan to have the plant up and running by the end of the decade.

    Thorium is considered "abundant" (it's only 3x times of uranium in earths crust) mostly beacuse much less is needed to run a reactor than with uranium. If we are to talk of necessary evils, Thorium reactors would be the only viable option for survival of the nuclear industry.

    But it still produces nuclear waste, among it plutonium, altough in much smaller quantities.

    The main benefit of thorium reactors over uranium / Mox reactors is, that they can not blow up. While uranium powered plants need constant source of cooling for the core, with thorium reactors the chain reaction stops as soon as the outside source is turned off.

    I am not by any chance promoting any kind of nuclear technology, but with all above being said, i really don't understand any country investing moneys into building old tech uranium reactors, either they be french, japanese, american or russian, while now at least 2 countries have declared that they will have thorium reactors up and running in a very short time. (China was the first to announce building a set of thorium reactors for commercial electricity production). Is this why developed countries are ditching their old nukes, or is it the nuclear war drums beating from every corner? It just might be both.

    Japan's new normal in radiation exposure is getting ridiculous almost every day, particularly in Fukushima Prefecture.

    Fukushima City announced the result of the readings of the glass badges worn by children and pregnant women in the city for the month of September, and the highest reading was 1.7 millisievert external radiation exposure in one month for a 3rd-grader in an elementary school. Her two brothers were also found with high radiation reading off their badges.

    The city says, "That level of radiation does not affect health".

    Fukushima has about 185,000 hectares of cedar forests

    If there is one tree in each 3m x 3m that means 1.111 trees in hectare or about 205 million cedar trees in Fukushima. Now the closest data i found was that a 16 year old pine tree produces 81 grams of pollen per day. Thats on average 1134 grams of pollen (> 1 liter) over a 14-day pollen shed.

    So, basically what we get is that when trees start feeling funky... there will be 205 mio liters (205.000 tons) of radioactive pollen flying out of Fukushima each 14 days.

    Most of today's power plants — from some of the largest solar arrays to nuclear energy facilities — rely on the boiling and condensing of water to produce energy.

    The process of turning heated water into energy was essentially understood by James Watt all the way back in 1765. Heat from the sun or from a controlled nuclear reaction boils water, which then expands, moves a turbine and generates power.

"The low temperature phase is nonmagnetic but the high temperature phase is a strong magnet, almost as strong as iron at the same temperature." The researchers immediately realized that such an alloy could act like the phase- transitioning water in a power plant.

    "If you surround the alloy by a small coil and heat it through the phase transformation, the suddenly changing magnetization induces a current in the coil," said James. "In the process the alloy absorbs some latent heat. It turns heat directly into electricity."
